Dig into the Past: Become a Paleontologist

Introduction

Session 1

Session 2

Session 3

Have you ever wanted to learn more about the past and the creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago? By using the DDN system students will have the opportunity to meet real paleontologists and learn more about fossils left behind from long ago.  Students will gain the knowledge and skills to apply to their own dig.  As junior paleontologists, students will find out what a paleontologist does, the tools they use and where they are looking for these interesting artifacts.  Students will learn about an actual "dig" here in South Dakota and do fun activities that simulate the real thing.  Finally, the students will learn how to come to scientific conclusions about their findings.  Dig into this fun and interactive unit!

Desired Understanding:
Students will understand that science involves a systematic approach to information gathering and problem solving through processes such as inquiry, observation, data analysis, experimentation, communication, and collaboration.

Participants Will Learn:
What a paleontologist does, how they collect data, and interpret data.
